From the Crypt

Project Run & Play has officially started! I really wanted to have everything finished for the sewalong since they announced the themes ages ago, but life got a bit distracting {my daughter's thighs distract me daily. They're delicious.} and so I only just finished up the first thing yesterday.

The first theme is a pattern remix of Katy from No Big Dill's A Very Biased Skirt tutorial. Even though now I have an adorable daughter to sew for now, there's still a big gap in sewing for boys so I wanted to focus on Vince as much as possible this season for the sewalong.

But.

Uh.

How do I remix a skirt with ruffled layers of bias strips?

The first thing that came to my head STUCK. Strips of fabric could be like a mummy, and I had heaps of cream cotton to work with. At first I was going to have it as a collared, button-up shirt. I was worried he'd look too much like a fancy pirate...

Then one night as I lay in bed fretting I decided to do a mummy wraps hoodie. Perfect timing, because my Mummy leggings from Black Milk arrived while I was working on this.

Cos I'm a mummy... geddit?
For practice, I made a skirt for Edison. I used Dana's circle skirt tutorial and put the bias strips on it.

I love how it turned out but it didn't have that WOW factor to it. It was cute and pretty but I wasn't pushing myself as far as I could. I really want to get out of my comfort zone with this sewalong!

The most difficult part of this was cutting what felt like 100m of bias strips.

And then I didn't have enough for the top of the second sleeve so I had to cut some more!

Honestly I didn't know how it would turn out. I did the hood first and wasn't 100% impressed with it, but once I did the body and could see how it was looking I was feeling more confident so by the time the sleeves were done I was sold.

I love it.

Walk like an Egyptian
I think I'm going to make a little fez hat to go with it...

I did take photos so I can write a semi-tutorial for this :)

The sleeve came up to my elbow but it made me laugh that it fit. It looks like I have a broken arm.
It's not too late to jump in on the sewalong! Check out the rules here.

  2. I love it! My boys would love a mummy hoodie. And girl, it is seriously unfair that your legs look that good in leggings after just having a baby. Good for you!

  4. This is an amazing use of bias tape, and Vinnie's camera hamming makes it even more awesome. Love the combination too of skinny pants, layerd jacket and chunky boots. That's a serious fashion monster you've got there.
