t-shirt surgery tuesday: captain america onesie

captain america t-shirt to onesie! • www.max-california.com

there are way too many shirts in my stash to reconstruct, so in an effort to actually USE them, i grabbed a stack of them and made the baby about six new onesies. These photos are from like four months ago, he looks so young haha.

i used the rolled hem romper pattern from brindille & twig and ignored the length of the legs in the pattern, using the hem of the t-shirts instead! the fronts of the tees became the backs, the sleeve pieces used the old sleeves of the original shirt. I used snaps down the front, but they are the last of my good ones. i re ordered some from ebay and i'm just having not a fun time with them at all :| anyone have recommendations for good snaps?

Some other onesies i have cut out still to sew up i'm going to put zips in instead, we have so many Bonds Zippy suits for nova we're just way into the convenience instead of fiddling with snaps while trying to deal with a VERY ACTIVE little boy.

Moto X Rainbow

moto x rainbow outfit • www.max-california.com

I love sewing things like this, just for no reason than i just wanted to. I have such a huge passion for fun kids' clothes, loud and bright and fun to wear, and it's getting really hard to find the content I want (if you are this person, or know someone, please say hello bc i NEED YOU in my life). This just started with a pair of motocross-inspired pants that I pinned on my pinterest, and then it sort of just spiralled out into this entire fun outfit. The best part, as usual, is that Edison LOVES this outfit so much. Unfortunately there's not really a need to wear cropped jackets much, so she usually only wears it when she remembers she has it or if she's playing. the pants and the cropped top though are both items she wears a lot!

moto x rainbow outfit • www.max-california.com

This whole outfit is just jam-packed with fun! the colours, the fabrics, the amount of pockets! the jacket also has a backpack built into the back of it, we've been calling it a backpacket ahah. It's made from 100% recycled and reused fabrics from my scrap bins so it was really fun!

moto x rainbow outfit • www.max-california.com

Let's start with the pants! I used all scraps and leftover fabric for all of this, most of them leftovers from this fun time! The pattern is the aviator pants by winter wear designs. I was originally going to leave the cargo pockets off the side because i'm not really into cargo pants/pockets but then i was like, hang on just a minute! the only reason i'm not into them is because of all those pants and shorts guys were wearing in the early 2000s and it just was a bit of a slobby look (especially when they wore them with thongs, lmao). why should i let other people's bad fashion get in my way of a good time?

moto x rainbow outfit • www.max-california.com

exactly, and that's how eddie's pants have got the cutest little cargo pockets on them! there's six pockets in the pants overall, which i think is pretty amazing. the cargo pockets were made from scraps from ikea curtains! the fabric is a super heavy almost canvas, and one is from one set of curtains that has like black and white trees on it, the other is cat faces. I don't think you can get either of them anymore, but they looked like this and this.

the knee patches are paddd with fleece on the inside, so they're soft and sturdy and also just a cute little contrast. the fabric is leftovers from these dresses i made so long ago! the waistband is from a knit skirt i got from the opshop. i cut up the main part of it for leggings for nova (using the hem of the mini skirt as hem on the leggings ;D ) and the waistband was just unpicked and reused for these pants - even the elastic was reused!

I DID sew the triangle insets at the ankles on the wrong way, they're meant to be on the outside of the leg but does it really matter? nope! still looks pretty cool, especially in leopard print! i used the same fabric for the beautiful welt pockets on the bum, which i am SO pleased with. they turned out so neat and perfect, STOKED.

the ankle cuffs are the leftovers from the rainbow striped shirt i made for myself earlier this year! still a shirt i wear weekly, too! i think the different coloured cuffs are fun!

Honestly i really want a pair for myself... okay onto the jacket!

I used the reversible zippy hoodie by kitschy coo! i didn't make this reversible because of the zipper, but it's fully lined and if eddie wanted to keep it unzipped she could definitely wear it the other way out as well. The main part of the jacket is also ikea fabric, it's this really fun pink & white stripe with big broccoli pieces on it. it's thick, like a canvas and the same kind of fabric as the curtains. This fabric i thought was so funny, that's why i bought it, but then i realised that on the other side of the world my sewing bff has the exact same fabric ._. meant to be!

The wrist cuffs and the ribbing at the bottom of the jacket are the same as the ankle cuffs on the pants and i used a big chunky yellow separating zipper for the front. I think that was the only thing in this whole outfit that i had to actually go out and buy! my zip stash is looking pretty miserable (like my button box). The front is decorated with just little bits and bobs, a patch with her name on it (i used one of the labels i got made up to sew into her clothes), and some ribbon with lions on it as well as some orange pompom trim!

Obviously  i cropped it from the original pattern, i don't know how much but i just measured how long i wanted it on her as well as compensating for the bottom band and just cut the pattern piece to that length.

The back is like a huge backpatch, made from the cat canvas fabric, with a box pocket attached to it and a zip. This part was so fun to figure out, but it's not too hard! just make sure when you're adding fun little features you add them to the pieces before you construct your finished garment.

This is what it looks like reversed:

Last, but not least, let's take a look at the cute cropped top! This style is my favourite, and hers too. I just loved the cropped shirt/long sleeves combo and emulate it into my own fashion as well! The pattern i used here was the petite sweater by lil luxe collection. I adore it!

moto x rainbow outfit • www.max-california.com

The fabrics were all from my clothing to reconstruct stash, it's a big tub in the corner of the playroom where clothing gets flung if i'm not going to wear it anymore but i want to sew it up into something else! The black with white stripes was a shirt of tim's, the blue was a dress and the white with black stripes is a shirt that used to be mine.

I didn't make any alterations to the pattern, except for swapping the cowl neck out for a regular slightly high neckband. i think eddie is a size 4 with LLC patterns

Azur Swimsuit & Giveaway!

It's heating up here in australia, like the world knows it's spring so instantly it's super hot and ready to bake us all - at leats it was, it's been raining the last three days which is also exciting because oh man we need the rain so very badly. but spring means summer is coming and that means trips to the pool and beach holidays and hikes and exploring and just being out and about in the world and that is SO EXCITING for me.

it's also exciting because that means swimsuits for the kids (and also rashies because how about that australian sun :,) ) and that means i get to sew more stuff for the two big kids that already have sooo much stuff. Eddie has outgrown all her swimsuits, and with swim lessons starting for her this term through school i was pretty excited to finally try out the azur swimsuit. i've had it in my pattern stash for such a long time and it sewed up pretty rapidly!

it's reversible, which is fun and also handy because it means you don't have to line everything. there's a few options with the straps but i chose the crossover back as well as the little horizontal backstrap.

the striped lycra is from spotlight probably, another thing in my stash for 84 years, and the galaxy print is from cali fabrics. i'm going to make her a little rashie as well from the galaxy to go with it so she can be sunsafe c: the fabric i have is a purple sort of mix, and i couldn't find the exact colourway but there's a blue one here.

The pattern is fairly straightforward, although i made a few errors. at first i just cut out one of each piece, because that's what it said on the pattern pieces. obviously you need two because you need it to be reversible. essentially you're cutting out two swimsuits, so keep that in mind!

another thing i really struggled with was sewing the legholes and turning it the right way. I still have no idea what i was supposed to do, because i unpicked it twice (after screwing up twice) and just sort of did it my own way. Which worked out so that's good!

Edison LOVES her swimsuit, to pieces, and i'm going to make her a matching one for her cousin. It'll be so cute to see them swimming together in their matching reversible togs!

The Azur Reversible Swimsuit is available at 20% for a limited time in the Project Run & Play shop! For the chance to win one a copy of the pattern, leave a comment on this post. Winner will be chosen at random \o/

Thread Faction #202: Panda Pants

panda pants • www.max-california.com

let's see how many pics of my butt i can put on my blog before you get sick of it :,) OKAY BUT(T) FOR REAL I'm pretty stoked to be bringing you my take on the latest thread faction pattern. you bubs should know i'm a fan of the simple but effective designs from liz (i haven't blogged about everything i've made yet but there's a small chunk here)

What do you call these things? I call them knickers, the word panties just freaks me out haha, underwear? underpants? undies? ANYWAY whatever you call them, we all wear them and you may as well sew your own because it takes like 10min to cut it out and stitch it together and can you really go wrong with that? Also the scrap-busting is PERFECT with these!

DIY panda pants • www.max-california.com

i went the easy route with these and used bands for the waist and leg holes instead of fancy elastic! I do have lingerie elastic and also fold-over elastic but the sort of underpants i wear have sturdy waistbands (ie bonds) so i went with what i knew i was going to love. and i do, i love them :D

I love the cut of them too, i guess it depends on your fabric but mine is very high stretch so they're high waisted on me and i love the leg cut as well. I think they're flattering! the seams are on teh front instead of the sides so you can do some fun colour blocking. I didn't get a pic of the inside gusset but i used a more cotton based stretch fabric since it was going against a very important part of my body and i felt it needed to breath a bit you know? Anyway the gusset has cactii on it so it's still cute too!

The fabric is from Sew Big Fabrics, it was my first ever custom order and while it was from the US (i'm starting to order from australian places now bc, the shipping is intense, and also i want to support aussie made!) i couldn't NOT because the prints were SO CUTE. Also i bought it knowing that not a scrap of this fabric was for the kids, it's all for ME okay? About time :D they're really friendly and the fabric is sooo insanely soft I love it. I get so many compliments on my shirt!

The shirt is the Union St Tee by Hey June, its my go to for t-shirts because it's such a good fit and i get a good looking shirt every time. I've bought a few cute RTW shirts from artists because i love their prints (and supporting artists) but the fit is really boxy and bad so i'm trudting in m union st tee to cut them into a more flattering shape!

Socks are Dragonball Z from JayJays
Goldfish earrings from eBay
