Look 6: Reversible Crop Top + Tesla Dot Skirt

Here's a more details post on Look 6 from my Sew 'n Style Lil Luxe Collection adventures!

Three years ago i had the most fun using some Lil Luxe Collecton patterns and drafting some of my own to make a mini collection for eddie!

reversible rainbow crop top & dot skirt •

Looking at these photos makes me realise how much i love the Reversible Crop Top and how i should make some more for my girl! The Reversible Crop Top can be worn right side or inside out, but I also styled it with the button at the front like a little jacket, so it's like a double reversi top really! This pattern can be used for some great colour-blocking, as i sewed this up with no modifications to the original pattern - just some embellishing with the pompom trim!

reversible rainbow crop top & dot skirt •

the rainbow fabric is a printed rayon from spotlight and the spots are just a medium-weight cotton, i used the spots for the skirt as well! It's just a regular big gathered skirt made from two rectangle pieces of fabric and sewn onto a knit waistband (with some elastic inside to keep it up).

I feel like i should just make myself one of these this at this stage.

Sew a Contrast Panel inside a Hi-Low Dress Tutorial

Here is a quick little tutorial i made on how i did the contrast panel on Eddie's dress from the Project Run & Play mini challenge i participated in (and won!)

I used the Groove Dress by Made-It Patterns for Eddie's gorgeous dress so I thought I would do a tutorial on the simple little inside panel I added! This would work easily for any pattern with a lowered back hem for the skirt (or even a shirt!)

Trace the lower part of the skirt from the side seam and add about two cm to the top edge (you could add more if you like!).

I used woven fabric in the original dress and stitched it onto the knit dress which was a little tricky but worked out fine! Ideally you'd want to use the same sort of fabric/weight as the main fabric but also this is the sort of thing you can have fun with so, heck, sew whatever you want!

Fold over the top edge and press it (OR, be a little cheat like me with this knit fabric and just serge across the top. you just want it to have a nice edge). Right sides together, sew along the lower edge of the skirt and the contrast panel right up to the side seams. Clip along the curve and then flip it right side out.

Press it so it sits so nice! You can top stitch if you want, which i did to emulate the hem that will be going on the front of the dress. Carefully pin the top of the panel down to the back of the skirt (the part you folded over in the beginning) and stitch across it. Now just sew up the dress as usual! This is going to be a cute little green groove dress with a rainbow peekaboo panel!

Easy, but CUTE!

Clara Wrap Top Review

Rounding up the last of my Sew Fab sews this year is the Clara Wrap top. I sewed it up in this DELICIOUS merino jersey i bought from the fabric store in brisbane (i was so excited to go visit). I wasn't sure if this would go okay or how i would style it but it actually turned out super cute for the sort of clothes that I wear!

You can read my full review and the three ways I styled it over on the Sew Fab blog and even though the wrap top isn't available there anymore you can buy it directly from the Greenstyle Creations shop here.

Bucket Bag Review

As part of the Sew Fab Bundle recently, I also sewed up Gingercake patterns' Bucket Bag! I had a bucket bag  i really really adored and was excited to sew up another one that would match my outfits. I made two, one like a "shell" out of clear pvc plastic and the inner out of leopard print and ellie whittaker fabric. The inner is reversible and I wrote the full review and some tips on how to modify the pattern a little over on the Sew Fab blog.

This pattern is no longer part of the Sew Fab bundle (they change every time!) but you can still buy the bag pattern directly from Gingercake here

desert fox softie (but he kind looks like an eevee evolution)

I don't sew toys, like ever, but i always like the idea of it! There's so many adorable plush toy patterns out there and I've amassed quite a collection of them on my pinterest board for handmade toys! A few years ago i did sew up this super super super cute Desert Fox pattern when I sewed for Pattern Revolution and it was a part of the One Thimble (issue 8) tour!

desert fox softie (but he kinda looks like an eevee evolution) •

The Desert Fox Softie was designed by Felt With Love Designs and you can get it standalone on their site! As someone who has made probably two stuffed toys before this I can tell you that the pattern is not that difficult! I was going to make two, but I didn't because he was a little fiddly, however i think enough time has passed I should probably make this little guy a partner (or maybe two since there's three kids now!)

desert fox softie (but he kinda looks like an eevee evolution) •

I used black pleather for his gigantic eyes and scrap fabrics for the rest of him. I adore that he can stand up all on his own and the little contrast scrp on his tail. I'm not sure the fabric i used for the majority of his body, it's like a super soft fleece but it was LUSH.

he reminds us of some sort of eevee evolution, sort of like a glaceon maybe? I think i'm inspired now to make all the eeveelutions now ;D

Elliot Romper for One Thimble & Giveaway!

Good morning!

If you're already a fan of One Thimble Magazine then you've probably already heard the news - but if you haven't, let me be the one to break it to you:

One Thimble is BACK

where the wild things are romper •

that's right, and it's very exciting with all the new changes. You can read all about that here as well as get a peek inside the mag, but for now I'm going to show you one of the patterns you receive in the magazine - the Elliot Romper.

where the wild things are romper •
where the wild things are romper •

I think my favourite part about this is that it's made for WOVEN fabrics, and it's pretty easy to sew, honestly. I did have issues with the placket, but the instructions are clear and i feel my next one will be much easier for me to sew. It turned out fantastic anyway!

where the wild things are romper •

The Elliot Romper was designed by Tadah Patterns and comes in sizes 0000 - 4T. I sewed up the size 2 for Nova, who is a short but slightly-chunky 2 year old and it fits him so well. I used some super cute Where the Wild Things Are fabric i have had in my stash for TOO long. I was originally going to sew something for myself, because it has max all over it, but I knew i wanted this romper to be something cute and bright so a sacrifice was made!

where the wild things are romper •

I love the binding around the neck and the placket, it just looks so neat. The length of the pants i could have probably hemmed a bit deeper since he has short little legs but they're not too terrible and i might roll them up a little later!

most of the shoot looked like this :,) thanks nova

For your chance to win a copy of the new One Thimble Issue 21 - Spring 2019 please enter the rafflecopter prize draw here - Open until 12am Friday September 6th AEST

Hyacinth Moto Leggings review

Recently I sewed up a few things for the Sew Fab Pattern Sale. There were some really good patterns, including the Hyacinth Moto Leggings by Cucicucicoo Patterns. I wrote a full review with loads of pictures over on the Sew Fab site if you want to check it out! The leggings were only in the pattern bundle for a short time but you can buy them from the Cucicucicoo shop now.

Geometric Footed Baby Pants (free pattern)

sew much ado's free footed baby pants pattern •

Yes, I'm catching up on blogging about things i made in the last two years which is why suddenly you are seeing these tiny adorable little baby pants and a tiny adorable little baby wearing them! i was able to use up a bunch of scrap fabrics making these, which was so fun since the pattern is a cinch to sew up!

sew much ado's free footed baby pants pattern •

I used the free pattern from Sew Much Ado for the footed baby pants and as they only come in one size (newborn!) i zipped up a few pairs for the little man - and he wore them every time they were clean until he got too fat haha. The bunny in the photo is Lovey Bunny, a little lovey an old family friend made for Eddie when she was born which was such a BEAUTIFUL gift as eddie (now 7!) still sleeps with it. The same friend made a lamb for nova, which eddie named Lovey Lamb and I'm 100% going to take photos of them another day since they're so beautiful and obviously made with love!

EGGsellent LEGGings

Since having nova i've been super inspired to be sewing for me, and in doing that i'm also really embracing my weirdness, the things that make me unique, and sewing things that I want to wear because they make me feel happy! Does it matter if it is flattering to my mama body? nope. do i get self conscious in my crop tops? yeh, i do, a lot, what if someone sees a flash of my lumpy bumpy mummy tummy with my messed up bellybutton and that umbilical hernia lump above it? but i also love wearing crop tops with high-waisted leggings and doing that is making me accept my body more and more. sure, i could maybe work out again and start eating right but until they stop making vegemite shapes that's simply not going to happen! Also i really love my long legs and my cute peach butt!

egg leggings & matching crop top DIY •

The egg fabric came from Lincraft and I think I must have bought about a metre and a half, maybe two of it? I'm not sure it was so much, because i can eke out a pair of leggings in a metre.

The leggings are self-drafted, just copied from my favourite pair of ready-to-wear high-waisted leggings and the're my go to leggings pattern now because they fit so great and the high waist is the perfect height.

There are a pair of eggs right on my crotch and that kind of print placement always makes me laugh, it's probably my favourite part of this entire outfit!

The top is also self-drafted, although these days I have found a vintage boxy crop top pattern that I use religiously for both knits & wovens (it's Simplicity 9114)! I have also made socks out of the scraps of this fabric and it makes me laugh when i wear all three pieces together. If only i had enough to make a bucket hat to match :c

egg leggings & matching crop top DIY •

I accessorised my outfit with these toucan earrings I bought on eBay (although i'm fairly certain the design is a ripoff of another artist, so if they look familiar please let me know!) and a really fun clacky necklace i bought at the opshop for a couple of bucks. I love blues and greens, my favourite colours are Turquoise and Teal but when it comes to a good blue this one seems to be THE ONE (like, i've even had my hair this shade ahah)

Fried Egg Baby Breakfast Pants and a roundup of free baby sewing patterns

I wrote his post and had it ready to go over two years ago, but for some reason i never got around to taking the photos for it? Instead of editing it, i thought i'd put this little intro at the start and leave it in all it's glory because it's kind of cute. i had no idea that there was my little baby nova in me, i didn't know WHO it was!

I should probably preface this by saying that I'm pregnant? I sort of announced it to my friends and family then really didn't make a big thing about it on social media which is kinda funny because it's going to be my last pregnancy and I thought i'd make it a big huge swan song sort of thing.

I took like one bump photo when i was 9 weeks.

I'm 20 weeks now.

ANYWAY, so there's a trilogy being released at the beginning of August to complete my set and it's pretty exciting because we've been working hard to get this baby here ^_^

I've finally sewed something for the little one, a pair of Breakfast Pants!

breakfast pants •
breakfast pants •

The leggings are self drafted and the egg butt is a reverse applique (you sew it on the inside of the fabric and cut the main fabric away), all the fabrics are scraps from my stash!

So since this is my last pregnancy I'm opting to not find out the gender. It's pretty exciting, but wow the unisex choice anywhere is sooo crap. Fortunately I'm not averse to putting my son in pink or florals or dressing my girl in "boy" clothes. Lucky for us clothes and colours don't have a gender ;)

breakfast pants •

I've made a round up of little tiny baby sewing patterns because after trawling for a while I found it difficult to find the things I KNEW were out there! I know babies don't last in that newborn stage for very long but it's still sweet to sew small things you know? This roundup includes (free) patterns for babies from freshly squeezed to about 6 months in size and include mini reviews by me of the ones i have sewed. I'm not including any dresses in this because i'm trying to keep it unisex (and you can find cute dresses everywhere)

30+ free unisex baby patterns to sew •

Ellidactyl's 10k pants - (0m-12y) these are a relaxed fit pant with a few options and a ginormous size range. they seem like a great base to customise and use again and again. to get this pattern for free, you must be a member of their facebook group.
ikatee's Barcelona joggers - (6m-2T) these are one of he five options you can choose for a free pattern when you sign up to their newsletter. They're an adorable little sweatpant!

Sofilantjes' baby harem pants - (0-12m) this pattern is free with the code you can get from their facebook group. I'm not a fan of harem pants on kids, only because i made a few for my oldest and he ripped the crotch out of them constantly while trying to climb things, but i feel for babies they're just perfect!
5 out of 4 patterns' ninja leggings - (0m-14y) these cute leggings come in two length options as well as options for having a gusset, half-gusset or none at all
Made by Jack's Mum lightning leggings- (premmie-12y) i love that pattern companies these days are doing such great size ranges. i remember when i was sewing for vincent it was like baby to 3T and then 3T to 8 and then that was basically it (and you had to buy the size ranges separately!). this pattern has options for nappy butts or kids that are in underpants, two fit options (relaxed or slim) and three lengths
Shwin Designs knit baby pants - (0-3m) these baby pants are cute and soft-looking and easy!

The Alison Show's tiny t - (0-12mths) This pattern is perf if you want a really cute little raglan-sleeved shirt base. you can easily customise it, add a skirt for the bottom if you want a comfy little t-shirt dress. It's a really great little pattern!
Sew In Love's baby kimono - (3-9m) this cute cute cute little kimono wrap. you can access this free pattern by signing up to the newlsetter
Small Dream Factory's lapped tee- (0-24mths) we call these envelope necks as well, and while the neckline is kinda fiddly
Brindille & Twig's ringer tee - (0-6y) this is a great multi sized pattern and i love the fit
Misusu Pattern's Rowan Tee - (0m-14y) the size range is collossal with this FREE pattern, and i'm in love with the dolman sleeves. I feel i have really overlooked how satisfying sewing a basic pattern can be and i could definitely make a hundred of these and never hate it!
Lowland Kids raglan sweater - (0m-8y) this pattern is free with the discount code you can get from their facebook group. I've sewn just one of these up so far and i really like it! I love that you can make this either a sweater/jumper or just a tee
Misusu Pattern's Max Tee - (0m-6y) - i haven't sewn this one up but i love that you can use woven fabric for the bib front. this one is also free if you join the facebook group.
Ellidactyl's 5k tee - (0m-12y) this seems like a really great basic tee with a bunch of different options. there's colour-blocking and a few sleeve variations (the layered look is kinda cute and there is also a tank top version). You need to get the code from the facebook group for this to be a freebie.
Duckbutt Designs' Essential Raglan - (0m-12y) this free pattern is a great peek into the baseline standard that DBD are doing for all their patterns now. to receive it for free you just need to sign up to their newsletter

Diaper Covers

Brindille & Twig's Bummies - (0-3T) i haven't sewn these yet but i can't wait for summer!
Made Everyday's perfect diaper cover - (0-2T!)  (there's a great tutorial here by One Little Minute for turning this pattern into little shorts)

Coral & Co's beanie- (premmie-12mths) Okay so i feel like baby beanies are one of those things you end up having six hundred of and your kid ends up wearing one like once? nevertheless, i included them here because the sorts of beanies i like to put my kids into I don't own!
Duckbutt Designs' duck muffin beanie - (premmie-L adult) this is a cute little slouch beanie you can use all your scraps up on!

Brindille & Twig's Hooded Raglan Sweatshirt - (0m-6T) make sure you use stretchy fleece if you're making a jumper. i know that's a no-brainer really but i did not and the baby wore his hoodie once and the removal was stressful ahha.

Okay so I think i've sewn ONE onesie/romper in my entire life for eddie I think it was and it was really fiddly and I didn't really enjoy it and I mean i have like a thousand onesies by this stage (this is the fifth baby on my side of the family!) so my desire to sew any onesies is at an all time low BUT i did sew a few for this baby (and since this post i have sewn a bunch of rompers for him - from a paid pattern!)

Nordic Pattern's teddy bear overalls - (premmie-12m) nordic patterns don't seem to be around anymore but their pattern for this unBEARably adorable oneside is still available on Sew Mama Sew
Small Dream Factory's baby onesie - (0mths-4T) the size range on this is phenomenal!
Mamma Can Do It's free onesie pattern - (3-6m) this free onesie pattern has an 'envelope' style neckline meaning it's super easy to get those beautiful baby heads in and out of their clothes. it also comes with several sleeve lengths.
Purl Soho's fleece baby jumpsuit - (0-9m) i love tht this onesie has no zippers and fastens with only two snaps!

Made by Jack's Mum's sandcastle bucket hat - (0m-XL adult) how can you go past a free bucket hat pattern in such an insane size range? I haven't sewn this pattern before but i have sewn other MBJM patterns so i know it is perfect! there is also a tutorial for adding a little chinstrap to the hat :3
Homemade Toast's baby Toms - okay i need to preface this by saying that last time i sewed these they were vincent sized and they were wildly insanely WIDE. My friend Kat sewed some toddler ones too and we both agreed we made shoe boats instead of TOMS so i was hella hesitant to try again (which kinda sucked since i'd bought the toddler pattern to ensure a good fit). There's a tonne of good reviews out there for the baby size so I decided it might be another go? Probably NOT a staple for babies, ahah.

Pug Stellan Tee

Hello friends! it's been a really long time since i have actually posted anything on this blog bu i am here! i am around! It just takes so much effort to take nice blog-worthy photos, edit them and then write about them (it's so much easier and faster to microblog on my instagram!) but i DO miss blogging so here i am!

pug printed stellan tee •

This fabric was originally bought for Vin, who is OBSESSED with pugs (and is also ten now, whaaat, that means this blog is ten years old - byeeeee) but i couldn't resist the yellow and buttery softness of the french terry to make myself a tee. The fabric is from Birds of  a Feather, which is an austrlian custom fabric business and i'm a fan of the bright colours and beautiful fabrics that are printed on!

I've been trying out various free patterns around the internet and this one is the Stellan Tee by French Navy.

pug printed stellan tee •

I sewed it up in a size M (i'm an australian size 12 mostly) and i really love the fit, even if the sleeves are a little longer than i usually wear. The pattern has a curved hem but after i sewed it up i hated the way it looked on me so i cut it straight and re-hemmed it.

pug printed stellan tee •

the back of the neck has a cool reinforcement but i completely messed it up when i wa sewing it and just did not want to unpick it so it' got that bunchy thing going on. i don't mind it, really, like i have been working really hard with making sure i sew things correctly, taking pride in my work and making sure it looks perfect - sort of like, because it's homemade i don't want it to look 'home made'? but also lately i've been letting the imperfections go because i'm making clothes for myself and if i'm happy enough to wear it then how bad can it be!

I have not sewn this tee again, i have many many t-shirt patterns, but if i needed to sew it again in a pinch i would!
